Emergency Contraceptive (Morning After Pill)
We are able to supply emergency contraception to patients that require it as an NHS extended service which is free of charge.
If you require
emergency contraception it is important that you come and see us
as soon as possible after the unprotected intercourse as the
earlier that emergency contraception is taken the more effective
that it is.
We have to
interview the person requiring the emergency contraception
themselves, we cannot supply to a partner or friend, however,
feel free to bring a partner or friend along with you.
WE have a confidential consultation area where our pharmacist will ask you a series of questions to ensure that emergency contraception is needed, that it is likely to be effective and that there are no reasons why you shouldn't take it.
During the consultation the pharmacist will ask you:
-
When the unprotected intercourse happened
-
When you had your last menstrual period
-
Whether you are taking any other medications at present
-
Whether you have certain illnesses that may prevent treatment working.
The
Pharmacist will explain:
-
How to take the emergency contraception (morning after pill)
-
Side effects that you may experience
-
How effective the medication is likely to be
-
Extra contraceptive precautions required after taking the pill.
If it is not
appropriate for us to supply you with emergency contraception we
will contact your doctor or the family planning clinic and
arrange an urgent appointment for you to see a doctor.
